The day after receiving your Class 10 results, you will feel as if the world has opened up with endless opportunities; however, it only lasts for a very short time before there is a huge question around you that will weigh heavily on your mind: "What stream should I pick, i.e., Arts, Commerce or Science?"
All students will hear from their family, friends, teachers, and that uncle who has an opinion on anything and everything, and as a parent, it is hard to help your child make an informed decision about their stream, especially when you know how much the world has changed since you made the choice you faced many years ago.
Take a deep breath; yes, this is an important decision, but it is not the final decision of your child's life. Many very successful people have changed their career path later on in life. What is most important at this time is that you help your child pick a stream which is representative of them as an individual; their interests, strengths and excitement.
In the following pages, we will take an in-depth review of all three streams (i.e., Arts, Commerce and Science) to help eliminate some common myths and misconceptions surrounding each of them.
You've probably heard people say, "Science is the best stream, commerce second, and arts are for those who couldn't manage to do sciences" - this could not be further from reality and can make for an unhappy few years.
What is true for 2026 is that all three streams can lead to excellent, profitable, and respected careers, and examples include a doctor (science), a chartered accountant (commerce), and a top lawyer (arts), each pulled from a different stream and each incredibly successful.
The determining factor for success is not the stream; it is how well the stream is matched to the talents and abilities of the student, as well as the level of motivation, persistence and skill they display. An arts student who is motivated and driven will always outperform a science student who is miserable and only took the subject because of pressure from someone else.
Let us therefore choose based on fit for all rather than making decisions on fear or other people's expectations.
The best fit for students who love working through issues, are interested in Mathematics and/or Biology, and want to understand everything from the human body to machines to the universe.
Science has a lot of challenges, but it opens up the most doors overall. In most schools, there are three different science streams:
Who will do well in this stream?
Students who are interested in pursuing engineering will prepare for this via the JEE, while students interested in pursuing medicine will prepare via the NEET. Science is also a great foundation for research, data science, biotech and defence careers, as well as careers in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence.
Word of Caution:
Out of each of the three streams, Science has the heaviest study load. If your student actually enjoys the subjects listed above, it will be worth it to them to complete the required work. However, if your student is only entering science based on its "prestige" or due to family pressure, the next two years could prove to be more than they bargained for. Interest is a bigger factor than pressure in determining the likelihood of success in any area.
Quick tip for the unsure: If a student truly can't decide and is reasonably comfortable with Maths and Science, taking Science does keep the most options open you can move from Science to Commerce or Arts later, but moving the other way is much harder.
Ideal for those who are curious about numbers and how the world of finance works. It is a great way to build on an interest in logic production and allow for entrepreneurship later on.
Commerce is one of the best career choices a student can make. It is growing rapidly because of the booming startups and the fintech sector in India. You may choose to study commerce with mathematics or without mathematics. Here are the two pathways:
A word of honesty: Many people think that science is harder and less respected when compared to the area of commerce, but that has changed. A Chartered Accountant can make a very high and secure wage, and an MBA from one of the top colleges in the country can lead to senior management opportunities with some of the largest companies in India. Commerce is a mixture of numbers and business, not laboratories and experiments; it is ideally suited to students who prefer strategy over experiments.
The Arts stream is often considered a weaker and less exciting option than either the Science or Commerce streams in India’s current (2026) context. A student who is interested in the Arts will gain many important skills and competencies, including communication, critical thinking, empathy, creativity, and cultural understanding. These are the very skills our world desperately needs today.
Common career pathways for those who complete their education via the Arts include) An important truth: The Arts can provide infinitely more creative and people-oriented career opportunities than either Science or Commerce can provide (for example, media, film, design, and social science). Many of India’s most successful lawyers, civil servants, writers, and leaders have had an Arts education. If your student has any interest at all in ideas, people, or creativity, do not let outdated misconceptions deter them from pursuing the Arts.
Forget what's "trending." Here's a simple, honest process any family can follow together:
One of the best things that can be given as a gift from you to your child at this point in time, is your participation. However, the greatest gift would be to assist your child in their exploration rather than have them comply with what you tell them to do.
Instead of making decisions for your child, ask them questions so they can make their own choices. Celebrate your child's interest in something rather than celebrate the name/reputation of what they are interested in. Keep in mind that your child will be working in a different world than you entered when you got out of school. Therefore, odds are very high that a happy, motivated student will work harder and longer within their stream than an unhappy student who is in a "prestigious" stream that was selected for them.
There is no "best" stream; there's only the best stream for you.
All three can lead to a successful, fulfilling life. The only truly wrong choice is one made out of fear, pressure, or someone else's expectations. Choose with honesty and clarity, and the road ahead becomes so much easier to walk.
Choosing a stream is far easier with someone who knows you and knows the options. At Saarthi4u, our career counsellors sit down with students and parents, understand each student's real strengths and interests, and help match them to the right stream and the right path beyond it.
